Racing

With full International Racing Status from World Sailing, the Topper is already part of sailing history.

The International recognition of Topper spans across the globe, with boats in over 50 countries. There are over 30,000 boats in the UK and nearly 20,000 in the rest of the world. 

A recognised Olympic pathway, the Topper is a clear choice for any who want to try competitive sailing. With many of the world renowned sailors starting out in this class it’s a sure fire way to build confidence and race among peers. The Topper racing class offers continual competitive opportunities as sailors progress, all within a safe and friendly community.

Class Associations

The International Topper Class Association (ITCA World) provides an umbrella organisation for the numerous National Topper Class Associations (NTCAs) across the world.

ITCA (GBR) is the UK arm of the International Class Association for the Topper sailing dinghy.

Throughout the year ITCA (GBR) organises an extensive calendar of local, regional and national racing and training events around the UK. For more information, head to the ITCA Website, or take a look at our Events Calendar for key dates.

British Youth Sailing (BYS)

Supported by Sport England, Topper enables young dinghy sailors to develop their racing talent towards Olympic Class sailing.

The Topper Class is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) forming an integral part of the UK Youth Programme. This model equips the nation’s up and coming sailors with the necessary skills, knowledge and race experience to go on and achieve world-class success. The programme is designed to mentor sailors to one of the following outcomes:

  • Qualify for Team GBR for the World Sailing Youth World Championships.
  • Win a medal at the World or European Championships.
  • Successfully follow an Olympic Pathway


Former Topper sailors, and members of the British Sailing Team’s Olympic Training Programme include; Giles Scott, Helena Lucas, Bryony Bennet-Lloyd, Lorenzo Chiavarini, Dylan Fletcher, Nicola Groves, Elliot Hanson, David Kohler, Alex Mills-Barton, Alan Sign, Mike Wood, Ali Young and Annabel Cattermole.
